The old man and the sea
Ernest Hemingway (1899-1961) was an American novelist. In 1954, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature thanks to his last and well-known work called: The oldman and the sea.
This novel was written in 1951 and published in 1952. It is considered as a classic of the literacy.
1/ Plot summary
The main character, Santiago, is an old and poorCuban fisherman. He is very unlucky as he has been 84 days without catching anything. However, this old man is full of hope and don’t give up the idea of fishing.
The 85th day, he goes offshoreand put the lines. Suddenly, his line goes at a high depth with a tough strength. The terrible struggle opposes an old man on his tiny skiff who represents the human and a giant marlin which representsthe nature’s strength.
Santiago uses all his fishing skills and each stratagem he knows to tire out and kill the tremendous fish. He undergoes much sufferings and pain but his will is stronger thanthe pain. Santiago and the fish show qualities such as pride, honor, bravery, and both are subject to the same law: they must kill or be killed. The old man admits that his opponent is brave and callshim brother.
After 3 days and 2 nights, Santiago, half conscious because of the pain, put all his strength left to stab the marlin with a harpoon. This is the biggest marlin he has never seen.By the way of coming back, greedy sharks attracted by the marlin’s flesh and blood, devour the fruit of the old man’s work. Endly, on the harbour, people marvel about the width of the fish’s carcass.2/ Main Character
Santiago is a little rejected for the reason that he is unlucky. He has got just a friend or apprentice called Manolin but they can’t fish together because Manolin’sparents don’t want to.
I put me fast in the old man’s skin and I wanted him to prove he is a great fisherman but it was not so easy.
